The Sterling Packer Wheel has a low rolling resistance, requiring little horsepower. They are mounted on 7" spacing, and free to turn on 1 1/2" shaft, which rotates on bearings. Wheels are 24" diameter and weigh 56 pounds each.
Due to the unique design of our packer wheel, Sterling Soil Packers are more of a conservation and conditioning tool than they are a packer. Conservation by saving moisture and helping prevent wind and water erosion, conditioning by breaking clods and uniformly firming the seed bed.
The soil profile above shows how and why Sterling Soil Packers are set apart from other types of packers. As our packer wheels roll on freshly tilled soil they displace soil to the side which meets soil from the next wheel, forming a firm layer at that level and below. The ridge will dry out forming an insulation layer to help prevent water evaporation.
